SINGAPORE – Excitement is brewing in Punggol as former senior civil servant Foo Cexiang prepares to make his mark in the upcoming elections. Eyeing a spot in the newly introduced four-member GRC, Foo is diving headfirst into community engagement, learning from seasoned MPs governing the Punggol area.
At a recent event unveiling a revamped rooftop garden at Block 101 Punggol Field, Foo shared his ambitions with reporters. "While it's not final yet, I am here to absorb as much as I can from the current MPs and, frankly, I'm doing my utmost to be ready," the 40-year-old said.
With a background as the former director at the Ministry of Transport, Foo is no stranger to policy-making, having steered various initiatives including electric vehicle strategies. Just this month, he officially joined the Pasir Ris-Punggol Grassroots Organisation, signaling his commitment to the community.
Punggol GRC is shaping up to be a hot battleground in the upcoming elections, with the Workers' Party likely challenging the People’s Action Party (PAP). Current MPs Janil Puthucheary, Sun Xueling, and Yeo Wan Ling are recognized figures in the area, and they've been spotted mentoring Foo as he prepares.
When asked what unique perspective he brings, MP Yeo highlighted, "As a young father of three, he understands the aspirations of families in Punggol, and I hope he'll inject fresh ideas to our initiatives." She also noted his commitment to addressing the needs of the senior residents in the community.
At the garden event, which aims to foster connections among all age groups, Yeo emphasized the importance of such community spaces. "Our initiative is focused on rejuvenating engaging environments that cater to our youth, seniors, and families. It’s all about strengthening the bonds that bring our community closer together," she stated.
As Foo Cexiang gears up for a possible candidacy, Punggol residents are keenly watching this rising star, eager to see what innovations and connections he will foster in the community.
