In an exciting twist to the classic game of chess, Google has launched a brand-new chess website that features customizable pieces crafted by generative AI. This innovative platform allows players to create unique designs for their chess pieces based on personalized descriptions, utilizing Google's advanced Imagen 3 AI model. Whether you're dreaming of sci-fi knights or regal medieval rooks, the customization options are endless! Interestingly, when I requested sci-fi-themed pieces for my set, the AI generated a fantasy-themed counterpart for my opponent, showcasing its creative capabilities.
Once your pieces are set up, you can dive straight into a game. While the website is operational, it doesn't quite match the functionality of established chess applications. Currently, players can choose from three difficulty levels and two time control options, but there are limitations: you can't review previous moves, nor can you easily keep track of captured pieces. The default isometric view adds a visually appealing element to the game, though it might feel a bit disorienting compared to the traditional top-down layout that most are accustomed to. Thankfully, changing to a top-down view is possible in the settings for those who prefer it.
This launch comes at an exciting time, coinciding with the kickoff of the 2024 World Chess Championship, where the reigning champion Ding Liren is set to defend his title against the promising 18-year-old chess prodigy, Gukesh Dommaraju. As the principal sponsor of the event, Google is not just promoting this unique chess platform but is also unveiling various other chess-related initiatives aimed at enhancing the gaming experience.
In addition to the new website, Google announced a future chess bot called Gemini, set to launch in December for Gemini Advanced subscribers. This bot will allow players to make their moves by typing them out, with the Gemini system showcasing an updated chess board as the game progresses. However, there is a catch—currently, the AI struggles to accurately evaluate chess positions based on uploaded images. Fans of the game will have to wait and see if this feature enhances the way we interact with chess.
Get ready to experience chess like never before, as Google’s AI-powered chess game opens up a world of creative possibilities for chess enthusiasts everywhere!
