SINGAPORE: Get ready to see a stunning transformation on Singapore's highways! Starting in the second half of 2025, 19 sleek electric vehicles (EVs) will join the Traffic Police's patrol fleet, signaling a bold step towards sustainability.
These cutting-edge Polestar 2 EVs, from the innovative Swedish brand under Chinese giant Geely, are set to enhance the existing patrol capabilities of the Singapore Police Force (SPF). The rollout will be progressive, ensuring these new vehicles smoothly integrate into the existing fleet.
In a competitive public tender that ended in November 2023, the winning bid was about S$3.8 million (around US$2.9 million), which includes an extensive car maintenance program for over 10 years.
Why Polestar 2 EVs? A Game Changer for Road Safety!
The introduction of these EVs marks a pioneering moment, as the Traffic Police become the first Home Team department in Singapore to operationalize electric vehicles. The Polestar 2s won't just be stylish; they will serve a vital role—patrolling the expressways to assist in road accidents, help distressed drivers, and enforce the law on errant motorists.
But that's not all! These dynamic EVs can also venture onto other roads when the situation demands, delivering flexibility to the patrols.
High-Octane Features That Impress!
What’s under the hood? These EVs come equipped with powerful dual motors that provide "responsive acceleration," allowing officers to respond to emergencies with speed and precision. Thanks to the all-wheel drive system and regenerative braking—an innovative tech that recycles energy lost during braking—the Polestar 2 ensures stability even in challenging weather.
Impressively, these vehicles can hit 100km/h in less than five seconds and cover an astonishing range of up to 596km, based on global driving standards.
Designed with law enforcement in mind, the Polestar 2s will feature specialized modifications for police operations, including a secure center partition for holding detainees and robust run-flat tyres capable of traveling up to 80km after sustaining punctures.
Next-Level Technology for Unmatched Safety!
Equipped with state-of-the-art communication and surveillance systems, including automated number plate recognition and a livestreaming in-vehicle recording system, these patrol cars promise to enhance public safety like never before. Additionally, external message boards will enable officers to communicate vital warnings to road users instantly.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sam Tai heralded this initiative as a "significant milestone" for the Traffic Police, highlighting the commitment to a safer and greener future. He noted how these advanced vehicles will bolster their operational capabilities while promoting sustainable practices.
Tan Teck Chuan, Director of Platform Systems at the Home Team Science & Technology Agency, emphasized the excitement surrounding this technological leap, marking the beginning of a broader "electrification effort" across the Ministry of Home Affairs. Prepare yourself—changes are coming to Singapore's roads, and they're electrifying!
