BANGKOK: The aftermath of a catastrophic earthquake in neighboring Myanmar has left the Thai capital reeling, following the tragic collapse of a 30-storey skyscraper currently under construction. Occurring on Friday, the earthquake measured a staggering 7.7 on the Richter scale, leading to devastation not only in Myanmar but resulting in at least 11 deaths in Bangkok alone.

Among the countless heart-wrenching stories is that of Naruemol Thonglek, who anxiously awaits word on her boyfriend, Kyi Than, an electrician among the 76 individuals still trapped within the mountain of rubble. "I'm devastated ... I've never seen anything like this in my entire life," the 45-year-old shared from a makeshift shelter near the building site, where families have gathered, some praying and others simply holding onto hope.

As rescue workers continue their relentless search, the deputy governor of Bangkok, Tavida Kamolvej, sparked a glimmer of hope by reporting possible signs of life amidst the wreckage, although she urged caution as the conditions remain treacherous and uncertain. “We need a quiet moment to determine the source of the noise,” she stated.

The crisis has drawn the attention of Thailand's Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who visited the site to monitor rescue efforts. The implications of the earthquake have been devastating, with over 1,700 lives claimed in Myanmar, and now 33 injured and numerous missing in Thailand, primarily under the collapsed building site.

Naruemol described Kyi Than, a Myanmar national, as part of a group of electricians working on the 26th floor at the time of the disaster. Her emotional plea resonates with many searching for their loved ones: “If you can hear my voice, if you're still alive, please shout and let the officials know,” she called out, desperately wishing for even a sign of life.

Another grieving family member, Daodee Paruay, has also been at the site for two days. She holds onto the hope that her brother, also an electrician, will be found alive. "We wait. We wait. We will wait until they are found," she expressed, echoing the sentiments of numerous families clinging to hope amid despair.
