Major Political Shift in Singapore's East Coast GRC
In a surprising announcement, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Mohamad Maliki Osman revealed he will not be contesting in the upcoming General Election for East Coast GRC. Instead, he is endorsing newcomer Mdm Hazlina Abdul Halim from the People’s Action Party (PAP) to take over his seat.
Speaking to reporters during a walkabout in Bedok North, part of his constituency, Dr. Maliki clarified that this decision does not mean he is retiring from politics. "I’m not going to stand as part of the new East Coast GRC team," he stated, leaving doors open for future endeavors.
Leading with Support and Experience
Dr. Maliki urged residents to rally behind Mdm Hazlina, affirming, "I will give her my endorsement and my support so she will be able to build on the work we have done." Known for his extensive experience, Dr. Maliki currently serves as the Second Minister for Education and Foreign Affairs and has represented the East Coast area since his re-election in 2001.
Mdm Hazlina, 40, brings a wealth of experience to the table, having led organizations like Make-A-Wish Singapore and served as president of the Singapore Muslim Women's Association. With a strong background in communication as a former journalist, she is seen as well-equipped to address the needs of the community.
Community and Future Plans
At the walkabout, Dr. Maliki praised Mdm Hazlina for her deep understanding of the Malay community, citing her leadership roles in non-profits and her commitment to community service. He expressed confidence that her extensive grassroots experience would serve her well in her new role.
"Her on-the-ground experience ensures she will understand constituents' needs and respond effectively," he emphasized.
Navigating Political Challenges Ahead
The PAP team, led by Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat, previously secured a narrow victory in a closely contested election. Mr. Heng stressed the importance of community engagement and the need to work hard to retain resident support amidst global uncertainties.
As the political landscape prepares for change, both Mdm Hazlina and Mr. Goh Pei Ming, another PAP newcomer, are committed to familiarizing themselves with the East Coast community through their ongoing initiatives.
What's Next for East Coast GRC?
With the East Coast GRC set to encompass new areas in the upcoming electoral boundaries, the PAP aims to maintain its presence against potential opposition challenges. As preparations ramp up, the party's final candidate lineup will be determined by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
As Singapore gears up for GE2025, all eyes are now on Mdm Hazlina to see if she can build on Dr. Maliki's legacy and connect with the diverse population of East Coast.
