Exciting News for Commuters and Travel Enthusiasts!
The long-awaited Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) is gearing up for construction, as the installation of vital rail systems is expected to kick off by the end of this year.
This crucial phase is focused on laying down tracks and deploying essential components such as signalling, communications, integrated supervisory control, and traction power supply systems. The RTS represents a monumental step towards enhancing connectivity between Singapore and Malaysia, a project confirmed by a joint announcement from Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA), Malaysia's Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp), and RTS Operations (RTSO).
Significant Progress Made
Significant progress has already been made since the ceremonial connection event held on January 11 of this year at the heart of the RTS’s cross-sea bridge. Both Singapore and Malaysia have been diligently working on the civil infrastructure needed for this ambitious transit link.
On the Singapore side, over 80% of the civil works are now complete, with key projects such as the sea and land viaducts coming to a close. The remaining tasks include finalizing roadworks, installing electrical and maintenance systems, and constructing essential customs facilities that will facilitate seamless cross-border travel.
Integration with Existing MRT System
One of the standout features of this project is its integration with the Woodlands North MRT Station, part of the existing Thomson-East Coast MRT Line. This integration, set to commence next year, aims to make passenger transfers smoother between the new RTS system and the existing rail network, setting the stage for enhanced convenience and efficiency.
Malaysian Infrastructure Development
Meanwhile, on the Malaysian side, infrastructure development is nearly at the finish line, boasting an impressive completion rate of approximately 93%. RTS Operations (RTSO) began laying the tracks on September 30 and plans to take charge of remaining infrastructure tasks by the end of this year.
Symbol of Partnership
To commemorate this significant development, a symbolic structure has been erected at the junction of the sea viaduct. Its unique handshake design symbolizes the strong partnership between Singapore and Malaysia in realizing this ambitious project.
Importance of the RTS
Why is this important? The RTS is not just a transit system; it is a catalyst for economic growth, tourism, and cultural exchanges between the two nations. With travel times expected to be reduced significantly, the RTS promises to change how people traverse this vital route.
