Tragic Motorcycle Crash in Singapore
In a devastating incident on the Seletar Expressway in Singapore, two Malaysian nationals were injured when their motorcycle collided with a trailer lorry on Monday night. The crash has now left one of the victims in critical condition, sparking concerns about road safety in the region.
Injuries and Hospitalization
The critically injured motorcycle driver, Muhammad Hairul Nizam Soyod, 35, has been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital after suffering severe injuries, including multiple fractures and internal bleeding. His companion, 23-year-old Hanafi Mis’ad, sustained a fractured left leg and is currently recovering in the hospital’s general ward. Reports indicate that both men were returning to Johor Baru after their shift at a chicken rice shop in Yishun when the unfortunate collision occurred.
Family Updates and Challenges
According to Muhammad Hairul's sister, Khariol Kamariah Soyod, her brother is set to undergo a second surgery aimed at addressing the severe injuries to his hip, which were exacerbated by being run over by the lorry. 'The doctor informed me that he has broken both hip bones and is dealing with significant internal bleeding,' she explained. 'We are waiting for updates post-surgery.'
Regrettably, the family is facing additional hardships as Muhammad Hairul's wife and their two-year-old son are unable to visit him due to passport issues. Khariol, who also works at the same establishment, is currently the only family member who can attend to her brother in the hospital.
Legal Proceedings
In the aftermath of the crash, local law enforcement has arrested a 32-year-old trailer driver for careless driving leading to grievous hurt, and police investigations are ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the event.
Road Safety Concerns
This tragic accident is a stark reminder of the increasing road dangers that motorcyclists face in Singapore. According to police data, the number of road fatalities jumped from 108 in 2022 to 136 in the past year, with a troubling trend showcasing that half of these fatalities involved motorcyclists and their passengers. In light of this, the Malaysian High Commission in Singapore has urged motorcyclists to exercise utmost vigilance while navigating the roads.
Hope for Recovery
As investigations continue, the families affected by this incident remain hopeful for recovery and raise awareness of the pressing need for improved road safety measures for all road users.
