Recently, Sam Mitrovic, a Microsoft solutions consultant, shared a disturbing experience that he and many others are facing. The escalation of AI scams has brought forth new tactics that are incredibly convincing.

The encounter began when Mitrovic received a notification alerting him to approve a Gmail account recovery attempt. This type of message is often the starting point for malicious activities. To add to the tension, he later received a phone call from a real Google number located in Sydney, Australia, but chose not to answer.

A week later, an identical notification was followed by another call. This time, he answered and found himself speaking to a person who sounded American. The caller claimed there had been suspicious activity detected on his Google account, allegedly insisting that someone accessed it a week prior. To add legitimacy, the caller offered to send him an email detailing the supposed incident, which quickly arrived from an official Google address.

However, as Mitrovic attentively read the email, he found himself hearing the caller on the other end repeating, 'Hello,' with an eerily identical tone. It dawned on him that the voice was crafted by AI, prompting him to hang up before the conversation went any further. Had he continued the call, he might have been manipulated into sharing sensitive information, such as an account recovery code, or directed to a counterfeit login page.

2. Unusual Calls: Google typically does not make phone calls to personal users; their contact is usually reserved for Business Profile accounts.

3. Recent Activity Check: Always verify your account's security by checking your recent login activity (accessible via your profile under 'Security' and then 'Recent security activity'). A lack of unusual activity is a good sign.

4. Scam Call Reports: A quick reverse phone search may reveal that many others have received similar scam calls, indicating a large-scale attempt.

5. Email Header Examination: By examining the full email header (available by clicking “more” next to the reply button and selecting “show original”), you can often find discrepancies in the “from” address that may suggest fraud.

6. No Unsolicited Contact: Any contact claiming to represent Google or other tech support that comes out of the blue is likely fraudulent. Always take a step back and verify the situation before sharing any personal details.
