Alarm Bells Ring as Local COVID-19 Outbreaks Surge: Don’t Miss Your Chance to Get Vaccinated!

In a concerning development, the local Health Unit has reported a significant increase in COVID-19 outbreaks, prompting the launch of an innovative campaign called "Walk-in Fridays." This initiative aims to provide vaccination opportunities for residents struggling to find pharmacies that offer flu shots and COVID-19 vaccines.

As Dr. Carol Zimbalatti, the medical officer of health, notes, "The upward trend we are witnessing in high-risk settings indicates that COVID-19 is still spreading in our communities at a worrying rate." Dr. Zimbalatti emphasized the importance of continued vigilance, stating, “Even though the pandemic feels distant, it's crucial to stay home if you're experiencing symptoms, wear a mask if you must venture out, and maintain good hygiene practices, including frequent handwashing and sanitizing high-touch surfaces.”

Since September, the region has recorded seven confirmed outbreaks, with COVID-19 accounting for six of these incidents. Alarmingly, about 33 percent of these outbreaks occurred between November 1 and 16, signaling a spike in cases that could significantly impact vulnerable populations.

The Health Unit is urging anyone who has yet to receive their vaccines to do so before the end of the year, adding that community response has been promising. "We've seen excellent participation at our 12 community clinics this fall," said Marlene Campsall, manager of the Health Unit's Vaccine Preventable Diseases program. "We're thankful for the collaboration of primary care providers and pharmacies in our effort to combat severe illness across the region."
