Join the Exciting Event
This weekend, prepare for an astronomical spectacle as the moon prepares to partially eclipse the sun! The Johnson GEO Centre in St. John’s is throwing an early-morning watch party that you don’t want to miss.
Special Arrangements for the Eclipse
According to science educator Rod Taylor, although the GEO Centre typically remains closed until April 2nd, special arrangements have been made for this cosmic event. Join fellow space enthusiasts as you witness the moon cover about 82% of the sun! This impressive sight will reach its maximum at 7:52 a.m.
Safety First!
While this solar eclipse may not compare to last summer’s total eclipse—where more than 98% of sunlight was blocked—this event still promises to be unforgettable. “At the peak, we’ll be able to see what they call the moon’s horns,” Taylor explained. But remember, safety first! It’s crucial to wear protective eyewear; looking directly at the sun can cause severe eye damage.
Event Details
The GEO Centre will open its doors bright and early at 6:30 a.m. and will remain open until noon, with the eclipse beginning at 6:57 a.m. In addition to the eclipse viewing, the event will feature a variety of engaging activities and, yes—hot chocolate will be served!
Weather Conditions
However, the viewing experience may be influenced by weather conditions, as the forecast currently predicts partly cloudy skies. So, fingers crossed for clear skies!
