For 32 incredible years, Maureen Wood has dedicated her life to helping couples in Dundee achieve their dream of parenthood at the Assisted Conception Unit (ACU) at Ninewells Hospital. As the senior charge nurse and the longest-serving member of the staff, Maureen has estimated that her tireless efforts have contributed to the birth of at least 10,000 babies, guiding hopeful parents through the complex journey of infertility treatments such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).

The Significance of ACU

The ACU holds a significant place in history; it was the very first facility in Scotland to offer IVF treatments to couples facing difficulties in conceiving. This year marks a remarkable milestone, celebrating 40 years since Dundee welcomed its first IVF baby. Moreover, Ninewells was the pioneer in providing NHS-funded IVF treatments, making it accessible to countless couples.

Maureen's Commitment and the Evolution of IVF

Maureen shared with BBC Scotland News, "My most favorite part is the success stories, but I also cherish the relationships I build with the patients. Supporting them through their journey, whether it's successful or not, is incredibly fulfilling." She elaborated on how the unit has transformed over the years, explaining, "In the early days, we had patients consult in a corridor with no privacy. Now, this is a specialized unit that helps provide comfort and support."

The Journey of IVF in Dundee

The original IVF unit was established in 1983 with just three rooms and shared facilities. It has since relocated and undergone major refurbishments, including a significant upgrade in 2011 that modernized its services to better cater to over 700 couples annually.

Changing Attitudes Towards IVF

As society’s perceptions of IVF have evolved, Maureen noted, “When we first opened, IVF was rarely discussed openly, but now there are plenty of forums and support systems available. We have dedicated nurse counsellors, and our phones are available 24/7 for patients seeking guidance."

Consider Kirsty Mathieson's journey. After struggling with "unexplained infertility" for years, she and her husband began IVF treatment in 2023. After the success of their first transfer, they joyously welcomed their daughter, Gia, in March. Kirsty navigated a long path filled with disappointment but shared her elation: "Seeing those two lines on the pregnancy test after three years of heartache was indescribable. If it wasn't for IVF, we wouldn't be parents." Inspired by her experience, she has started a local support group in Kirriemuir to help other women open up about their fertility struggles.
