In the latest twist of celebrity conflict, New York City politicians are urging Whoopi Goldberg to retract her on-air remarks claiming that a local bakery refused to take her birthday dessert order due to her political views.

The firestorm commenced when Goldberg, co-host of ABC's 'The View,' shared her experience of trying to order a tray of Charlotte Russe—a childhood favorite of hers—during the celebration of her 69th birthday on the show. In her segment, she alleged that the Staten Island bakery had declined her order, citing equipment issues while implying that it might be politically motivated.

Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella led the charge among local officials, standing by the bakery's owner, Jill Holtermann, at a press conference held in front of the 145-year-old establishment. Fossella fiercely defended the bakery, asserting that Goldberg’s insinuations had 'besmirched and defamed' their reputation.

"Not everybody wakes up every day thinking about politics," Fossella stated. He revealed that the bakery's boiler had malfunctioned, prompting them to pause on large orders until they could reliably fulfill them.
