As I immerse myself further into the early access of Path of Exile 2, I’ve decided to shift my focus from my level 88 Ranger to a level 45 Monk. After extensive time spent in the endgame, where I've managed to clear Tier 15 maps at lightning speed, I've come across several glaring issues that require urgent attention.

1. The Fatal Flaw of One-Death Maps

In the current state of the endgame, dying during a map run is an unbearable experience. The stakes are excessively high, leading to the loss of all progress in the map, your Waystone, map modifiers, and a percentage of your XP when above a certain level. This harsh penalty drags the experience from being a fun challenge to a frustrating annoyance. There must be a way to create a healthier balance between consequence and enjoyment.

2. Unfair Death Mechanics

While Grinding Gear Games (GGG) has improved various death mechanics, many remain deeply frustrating. Events that cause mass enemy spawns can lead to instant deaths due to elite modifiers. The punishing “one-portal death” system adds insult to injury, especially when battling tough bosses that can one-shot players due to minor missteps. Players need a way to learn from mistakes without heavy penalties.

3. The Dreaded Waystone Management

Managing Waystones, even with optimal Atlas tree upgrades, often feels more like a chore than engaging gameplay. Relying on specific strategies just to avoid using up valuable resources adds an unnecessary layer of frustration. High-tier maps should guarantee high-tier Waystones, yet players often receive low-tier drops despite increased drop rates. For many, the answer lies in trading, which detracts from the enjoyment of a self-sustained play style.

4. The Magic Find Obsession

Currently, the meta places overwhelming importance on Magic Find gear, overshadowing a variety of builds and making it frustrating to earn equally rewarding loot. Only those stacking high Magic Find gear seem to bypass the baseline reward metrics, leading to skewed game dynamics. Previous games in the genre faced similar challenges; however, PoE2 does not seem to have incorporated adequate solutions initially considered in Path of Exile 1.

5. Torturous Trials

The Ascendancy Trials are perhaps one of the most grueling activities currently available in the game. The time-consuming nature of the second set of trials, paired with excessively punishing modifiers, creates a barrier that is utterly unfun. A single death can mean losing a substantial amount of time and progress, leaving players feeling discouraged. Without changes to these trials, many will hesitate to even attempt them again.

Despite these issues, I've genuinely enjoyed my time playing Path of Exile 2. The thrill and satisfaction of advancing my characters have kept me engaged, but it's evident that these significant problems must be addressed during early access. Distinguishing between challenging endgame content and mechanics that feel punishing for the sake of it is critical to the game’s overall success.
