At 6-foot-1 and 192 pounds, Liljegren is known for his skating ability and puck-moving skills, though he’s faced criticism for his play around his own net, especially against heavier forwards.

Signed to a two-year contract worth $6 million in the offseason, Liljegren's $3 million cap hit complicates his trade potential, especially as teams are mostly capped out at this juncture of the season. However, there may still be teams willing to take a chance on him—especially rebuilding franchises or contenders with specific needs.

1. Dallas Stars

The Stars are currently struggling with defenseman depth, particularly after the underwhelming performance of Nils Lundkvist. After trading a first-round pick to the Rangers for Lundkvist in 2022, the Stars have not seen a return on that investment, with Lundkvist falling out of favor. Liljegren could potentially provide the offensive upside that Dallas sought in Lundkvist while offering more defensive reliability. With $2.4 million in cap space, the Stars could move a single player to the minors and bring in Liljegren.

2. Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers desperately need a solid partner for Darnell Nurse on the second defensive pairing. Their attempts to fill that role thus far have not yielded positive results. Lewis Dermott and Ty Emberson have struggled, leaving the Oilers vulnerable defensively. While Liljegren may not be a proven top-four defenseman, his skill set would certainly be a considerable upgrade. Edmonton has about $1 million in cap space, so they’d need to make some moves, particularly if losses continue to mount.

3. Florida Panthers

Trading Liljegren to a divisional rival like the Panthers might be a tough sell for the Leafs, but they may not have a choice if they’re looking to move him. Florida is currently tight against the cap, so they’d have to make adjustments to accommodate Liljegren's contract. However, the Panthers need bolstering on the right side of their blue line, where veteran players are forced to play on their off sides. Though this trade seems less likely, it cannot be completely ruled out given the situation.

4. Los Angeles Kings

With Drew Doughty out for at least a month due to a fractured ankle, the Kings are facing a defensive shortfall. The current lineup includes younger, less experienced players who may not be ready to shoulder the burden. Liljegren would easily surpass them in talent and experience. The Kings have the financial flexibility to add Liljegren's contract while Doughty is on long-term injured reserve, although they will need to manage the cap when he returns.

5. Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins are seen as the most fitting destination for Liljegren. Their general manager, Kyle Dubas, was instrumental in the Maple Leafs' front office during Liljegren's draft process and is familiar with his capabilities. Although the Penguins have established stars like Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang on the right side, Liljegren offers a step up from rookie Jack St. Ivany, who has struggled significantly this season. A move to Pittsburgh could benefit both parties.
