Prime Minister Mark Carney is facing mounting criticism for his defense of an MP who openly suggested targeting political rivals. This incident is not just a scandal; it’s a significant blow to Canadians' trust in their government.
When leaders overlook such behavior, they send a chilling message: accountability and safety can be compromised. It’s no wonder that only 28% of Canadians have faith in federal parliament, according to recent polling.
The federal and provincial governments must act swiftly to combat foreign interference and protect Canadians. They need to establish policies that ensure children can leave their bikes unattended on front lawns and that everyone can commute without fear.
Many Canadians, including young adults, recognize this shift. Having emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic, surveys show that 64% feel crime and violence have worsened. Alarmingly, one-third of newcomers to Ontario claim they feel safer in their home countries than in Canada.
Recent statistics paint a troubling picture; Canada’s property crime rates are climbing higher than many developed nations. Notably, car theft has skyrocketed, with a shocking 561% increase in Toronto since 2018, leading some to label Canada as "ground zero" for this crime.
In 2024 alone, Toronto reported 461 shootings, a 34% rise compared to the previous year, alongside nearly 26,000 violent assaults. Such violence isn’t confined to just one city either; downtown Vancouver has also seen random attacks, including a murder and severe assaults.
Retail theft is no longer rare—it’s a crisis. Small business owners are bearing the brunt of over $9.1 billion in losses in 2024, leading chains like Loblaws to equip employees with body cameras to fight back against increasing aggression and violence.
This chaos is largely a byproduct of ineffective government policies related to bail, sentencing, and safety measures. Without immediate reform, Canadians' faith in their government may continue to erode, leaving society in a state of fear and uncertainty.
