Microsoft Issues Urgent Alert for IT Administrators

Microsoft is sounding the alarm for IT admins everywhere: after a restart, some Windows Server 2025 domain controllers (DCs) could become completely unreachable, triggering catastrophic failures for applications and services reliant on them.

Understanding the Issue

According to the tech giant, the core of the problem lies in the servers defaulting to a standard firewall profile instead of the appropriate domain firewall settings following a reboot. This can lead to mismanagement of network traffic, rendering Windows Server 2025 DCs inaccessible on the network, or improperly exposing them over restricted ports and protocols.

Impact on Services and Applications

As a consequence, any services or applications operating on these affected DC servers, or attempting to communicate with them from remote devices, may fail or vanish from the network entirely. This could disrupt critical business operations and cause significant downtime.

Workaround: A Temporary Fix

Thankfully, there's a workaround! Administrators can manually restart the affected network adapter using PowerShell with the command: Restart-NetAdapter *. However, it’s crucial to note that this fix needs to be applied every single time the domain controller is rebooted, which can be a cumbersome task.

Automating the Solution

To alleviate this burden, Microsoft recommends setting up a scheduled task that automatically restarts the network adapter whenever the DC server reboots. This way, you can avoid the hassle of manual intervention and keep your services running smoothly.
